July 18, 2003 - 3:29 p.m. I was flipping through petfinder.com today, looking at cats. Ever since the boy got his cat, I've realized that I really quite like cats. I've never had any experience with them before - we always had dogs. Anyway, that's not my point. My point is that many, many, MANY of these cats had been abandoned by families who "didn't have time for them" or "moved to a building that doesn't allow cats". Am I the only person who thinks that a pet is a lifelong commitment? I spent tons of time and money on a guinea pig, once upon a time, and I would not change a thing. Sure, he was a glorified rodent. But he was MY glorified rodent. Why don't people take responsibility for their pets? Why do people abandon adult animals? Would they have liked it if their parents waited until they turned 13, drove them to an orphanage, and dropped them off? Yes, I will get all worked up over this, thank you. I think I've been watching too much Animal Precinct on Animal Planet. It follows the ASPCA's NY crime unit while they investigate animal cruelty complaints. Sometimes they arrest the jerks who abuse poor, defenseless animals. That makes me happy. I feel like Bob Barker. Get your pets spayed and neutered. And a word from me: don't take on that kind of responsibility unless you're sure you're up to the task. The reason I won't get a pet is because I'm never home, and that's not fair to an animal who needs attention. And to the guy on Animal Precinct who held his cat's whiskers (which contain nerve endings) up to the exhaust vent in his kitchen and burned them off? Get over here. I've got a nice fire I'd like you to shove your hand in. |
